Outdoor Pics...
I wanted to take some pictures of Tess outside among the flowers in her beautiful white baptism dress. I'm no photographer, but with the gorgeous flower gardens (at a park in Ogden) as the background, and our gorgeous gal Tess as the focus, how could I go wrong? Here are a few of the many pretty pictures we took...
As I was wandering around with Tess, Bryan was wandering around with Miles and Bree. Unbeknownst to me, Bryan and Miles were having their own little photo shoot. I cracked up when Bryan sent me these pictures from his phone...funny guys! (Click on the pictures to see them bigger, so you can really appreciate Miles's funny faces.) :)

Poor Bree!
Friday afternoon was just quiet...nothing too much going on. Bryan and Miles were in the garage doing something on the motorcycle, Tess was practicing the piano, I was doing something at the kitchen sink, and Bree was just bee-bopping around playing (wearing her favorite purple flip-flops
of course.) She started to run over to Tess at the piano bench, and due to the fact that she's 2 and trips a lot, combined with the dang flip flops that tend to trip her even more, she...tripped. And, boy, was it a doozy! Bryan said that he heard the "thunk" of something hard hitting another something hard from clear out in the garage, followed by the screams. I came running over from the sink (Bree's back was to me), and the first thing I happened to see was this:
Oh no. I knew those were teeth marks, and I knew it was going to be a bad one. I picked her up, and of course her mouth and chin were a sea of red. Such an awful feeling for a parent. Mouth wounds bleed so much that it really ups the parental "freak out" factor! I called for Bryan to come and help, then ran her to the sink to try to stop the bleeding. We lifted up her top lip to see the damage and her two front teeth were jammed way up into her gums, one so far that we could only see about 1/8 inch of it. Now, even though we were freaked out a bit, this ain't our first rodeo...Tess used to fall and cut her lip constantly (once the tooth even bit a hole clear through her bottom lip) and we aren't usually super quick to run to the doctor's office for things. We're more of "let's wait and see... I'm sure she'll be fine" type of parents.
But the bleeding, bleeding... the bleeding wouldn't slow down, and we could tell that it was not all coming from her teeth. Then it dawned on Bryan to ask her to stick out her tongue. After we saw her tongue, we both looked at each other and instantly thought "we gotta get this girl to the ER." It had a huge hamburger-looking gash in it, about 1/2 inch inward. I started driving her up to the ER while calling our neighbor who is a dentist. Sweet Bree had calmed down by now and was just holding a paper towel up to her mouth for the blood. (She kept saying, "need a na-kim, need a na-kim" [napkin.])
Here's a pic of the teeth, already looking much better than before: (Her gums were all bruised and purple though; didn't get that part in the picture.)
By this point in the room at the ER, she was pretty calm and happy. She stuck her tongue right out for me to take pictures. Ouch!
When the ER doc looked at her tongue he said, "Do you want the good news, or the great news?" I liked that assessment! He said that in only 2 or 3 days, we wouldn't even know this happened to her tongue. He said they (almost) never stitch a tongue because it heals so quickly on its own. The nurse also mentioned to me that in her 9 years in the ER, she has only seen a doc suture a tongue wound two times (and in both instances the tongue was almost cut completely off!)
Here's Bree, back at home, showing off her wound. Already it's looking less hamburger-ish.
She was obviously in quite a bit of pain and could not eat much. We gave her yogurt, but the cold hurt her, so she ended up eating a bunch of yogurt warmed in the microwave! (Doesn't sound too good to me, but she seemed to like it.) Here's a picture of her Saturday morning, showing how swollen her upper lip was:
On Sunday morning (about 36 hours after the cut), I asked her to stick out her tongue and I was shocked to see this:
Totally closed up, already! That little white line was the only trace of the cut. Amazing! As the day went on Sunday, while she talked and ate, it did open up again, but by Monday morning it was closed and stayed closed.
On Tuesday we got x-rays and found that there are two areas for concern...First, you can see that the tooth on the left did bump into the permanent tooth bud above it. Only time will tell if it will cause lasting damage or discoloration. Second, the tooth on the right got knocked crooked at a strange angle, so there is that little dark area where the root used to be, which could be a spot for infection, so we'll have to keep a watch out for that. But overall, it's not too bad. We'll go back to the "watch & wait." In the meantime, Bree is happy as can be and eating all her normal stuff again, so we're very grateful for that.
